A network in which all computers are considered equal (peers) and can send and receive information equally well. This is the basis of file-sharing services such as Kazaa and Morpheus
Entertainment
A function of mass communication that is performed in part by all 3 of the other 4 main functions (surveillance, correlation, cultural transmission) but also involves the generation of content designed specifically and exclusively to entertain
Cultural Transmission
The transference of the dominant culture, as well as its subcultures, from one generation to the next or to immigrants, which helps people learn how to fit into society
Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs)
Online games played by a number of people at the same time in which they develop characters or roles and interact with each other while completing quests or adventures
Soap Operas
A type of programming that began on radio and successfully moved to TV but that is now threatened by the increased variety of media types, as well as changes in lifestyles. Soap operas are dramatic story series that involve numerous characters and are aimed at a daytime audience of homemakers
User-Generated Content (UGC)
Media content that has been created by consumers or audience members, including videos, music, or other forms of content
Walter Elias Disney
Creator of animated cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Donald Duck and classic cartoons such as Bambi, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Fantasia. Founded the Disney media empire
Genre
A type of story that has recognizable and defined elements that distinguish it from other types of stories or nonfiction
Auteur
French for “author,” it is usually applied to directors who stamp their visions on the films they make, as opposed to directors who have but one role among many other professionals in the making of a film
Mods
Short for “modifications,” it refers to the practice of changing parts of the code in some games to alter how they are played or how they look
Serious Gaming
A growing area of gaming that creates video games that have educational value or purpose to them
Hays Code
A code established in 1930 by the movie industry to censor itself regarding showing nudity or glorifying antisocial acts on movies. Officials for the Hays Office had to approve each film that was distributed to a mass audience
