Chapter 10 Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
the process that converts solar energy into chemical energy
How do organisms obtain organic compounds?
autotrophic or heterotrophic nutrition
Autotrophs
-sustain themselves without eating anything derived from other organisms
-producers of the biosphere; producing organic molecules from CO2 and other inorganic molecules
Photoautotrophs
use energy of sunlight to make organic molecules(most plants)
Where does photosynthesis occur?
plants, algae, certain other protists and some prokaryotes
Heterotrophs
-obtain their organic material from other organisms
-consumers of the biosphere(feed on other organisms, special types of heterotrophs are “decomposers”)
-most depend on photoautotrophs for food and O2
What is the endosymbiont theory?
suggests that original chloroplast was a photosynthetic prokaryote that lived inside eukaryotic cell
