Chapter 10 Flashcards
behavioral compensation
people may change their behavior to not behave in a stereotypical matter
disidentification
people will redefine their self-concept to exclude an aspect of themselves from their self image so that the idea of being bad at it wont effect their self-esteem
glass escalator effect
men in a female-dominant work environment find that they may find themselves on a fast track to promotion
minority stress model
situational factors unrelated to one’s minority-group
membership, such as job loss, illness, or death of a loved one, are sources of general stress that affect
people’s well-being
objectified
a member of a non-dominant group is dehumanized and treated more like an object, or members of a category, rather than a living person
personal/group discrimination discrepency
people’s belief that their group as a
whole is more likely to be discriminated against than they, themselves, are as individuals
psychological disengagement
a person who fears poor performance
in academics or athletics, for example, might psychologically prepare for failure by de-emphasizing the
importance of success in that area
stereotype lift
members of nonstereotyped groups may perform better on tests when they are comparing themselves to the nonstereotyped groups
stereotype threat
people are afraid of confirming the stereotypes about their marginalized group
stigma consciousness
people who believe that they live in a stereotyped world and that this affects their interactions with outgroups
stigmatized
people apart of the non-dominant group are devalued for the traits that set them apart from the dominant group
token status
the only member present of a stigmatized group stands out
course
some stigmas have a time limit, like acne
this would be compared to something like ethnicity that is long lasting and unchangeable
concealability
some stigmas are able to be hidden or controlled, like sexuality or not talking about your alcoholic mother
origin
stigmas that are considered to be controllable, like weight, tend to be seen in a more negative light than one that is perceived to be uncontrollable
