chapter 10 Flashcards
Air quality
the amounts of gases and small particles in the atmosphere that influence ecosystems or human well-being.
Which gases account for over 99% of the gas molecules in Earth’s atmosphere?
nitrogen (), oxygen (), and argon (Ar)
Trace Gases
Gases that make up less than 1% of Earth’s atmosphere
Volatile Organic Compounds
organic chemicals that can vaporize into the air. Ex; Methane, paints, gasoline, and the exhaust from automobiles
suspended particles
Aerosols, Ex: water droplets that make up clouds and fog, smog, pollen etc.
Particulate matter
Very small solid and liquid particles suspended in the air
Primary Air Pollutants
chemicals or particles that are directly emitted from identifiable sources. Ex; carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide
Secondary Air Pollutants
chemicals or particles that are produced in the atmosphere as a result of reactions among chemicals or aerosols. Ex; Ozone
