CHAPTER 10,11,12 : NERVOUS SYSTEM UNFAMILIAR CONCEPTS Flashcards
TEMPORAL SUMMATION AND SPATIAL SUMMATION
→ temporal summation: involves one strong nerve sending constant signals in succession.
→ spatial summation: involves multiple nerves sending a signal to the cell body at the same time.
SIX CHEMICAL CLASSES OF NEUROTRANSMITTERS
→ acetylcholine
→ biogenic amines
→ amino acids
→ purines
→ peptides
→ gasses and liquids
DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN ASSOCIATION FIBERS, COMMISSURE FIBERS, AND PROJECTION FIBERS.
→ association: nerves that allow structures in the same hemisphere to communicate, extend horizontally.
→ commissure: connects the 2 hemispheres of the brain, the biggest commissure fiber is the corpus callosum.
→ projection: nerves that connect the upper CNS to the lower CNS (spinal cord), fibers extend vertically.
ORGAN FUNCTIONS OF RETICULAR FORMATION, BASAL NUCLEI, AND LIMBIC SYSTEM
→ reticular formation: controls visceral function in the body
→ basal nuclei: filters out unnecessary movements and allows for smooth movements.
→ limbic system: controls our emotions and ties emotional value into things.
PATHWAY OF CEREBROSPINAL FLUID
PATHWAY OF CEREBROSPINAL FLUID
Choroid plexus (CSF made) → 3rd ventricle (more CFS made) → cerebral aqueduct → 4th ventricle (more CSF made) → subarachnoid space → arachnoid granulations → dural venous sinuses
