Stress
The process by which we percieve and respond to certain events, called stressors, that we appraise as threatening and challenging
Three Main Stressors
Catastrophes
significant life changes
Daily hassles
General Adaption Syndrome
Seyle’s concept of the bodys adaptive response to stress in 3 stages- alarm, resistance, exhaustion
Tend and Befriend Response
Under stress, people (especially women) often provide support to others (tend) and bond with and seek support from others(Befriend)
learned helplessness
the hopelessness and passive resignation an animal or person learns when unable to avoid repeated aversive events
coping
attempting to reduce stress directly—by changing the stressor or the way we interact with that stressor
external locus of control
the perception that outside forces beyond our personal control determine our fate
internal locus of control
the perception that we control our own fate
self-control
the ability to control impulses and delay short-term gratification for greater long-term rewards
resilience
the personal strength that helps most people cope with stress and recover from adversity and even trauma
Problem focused coping sttartigies
help us feel a sense of control over our situiation
Emotion focused coping stratigies
protect our long term well being and help us feel better during a sitiation that cant be changed
