What is the meaning of biology?

A

The study of living things. The common division is Botany and Zoology.

What are the characteristics of living things?

A
  1. Movement - living organisms need to move in order to obtain the resources needed.
  2. Sensitivity - living organisms are sensitive; react to thing around them.
  3. Growth - substances are taken in and built into the structures of the body.
  4. Feeding - living organisms need food to survive; for energy.
  5. Respiration - getting energy out of food.
  6. Excretion - all living things create waste substances which they must excrete.
  7. Reproduction - all living things must make new individuals.

A
  1. Sexual reproduction - involving 2 organisms and by the use of gametes which join.
  2. Asexual reproduction - one organism which can produce without the use of gametes.

  1. Plants - autotrophs - make their own food by photosynthesis.
  2. Animals - heterotrophs - feed on ready made food by eating other organisms.
