Chaper 2 - Diffusion Flashcards
What do cells need?
Nutrients
Salts
Water
To get rid of waste such as carbon dioxide.
Substances pass through a cell by?
3 main processes called diffusion, osmosis, active transport.
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the movement of molecules from high concentration to low concentration in gasses, liquids and dissolved substances.
Lots of molecules = low concentration. True or false?
False.
What is the equilibrium?
Diffusion occurs until they’ve become equal.
The higher the temperature and greater surface area the . .
Faster diffusion will take place.
Microvilli are?
Microvilli are found in the liver and kidneys and increase the absorbing surface area.
Why would a smaller cube have a larger surface area compared to its volume?
It can be compared to an amoeba. Since it has a large surface area compared to volume, it can take up everything it needs just by diffusion alone whilst a big cube cannot have its needs carried out by diffusion alone due to the layers.
