Chaper 3 - Osmosis Flashcards
What is Osmosis?
Osmosis is the diffusion of water from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution across a semi-permeable membrane.
What is a dilute solution?
What is a concentrated solution?
A dilute solution is a solution with very few solute molecules and a lot of water molecules.
A concentrated solution is a solution with very few water molecules and a lot of solute molecules.
What is another word for a dilute solution?
Hypotonic solution.
What is another word for a concentrated solution?
Hypertonic solution.
What does isotonic mean?
Isotonic means that there is equal concentration.
What is a semi-permeable membrane and is it needed for osmosis to take place?
A semipermeable membrane is a membrane containing tiny pores through which only water molecules can pass. It is needed for osmosis to be carried out.
Osmosis is a special type of diffusion. True or false?
True.
When an animal cell is placed in pure water what happens to the cell?
The cell swells and becomes turgid. It may sometimes burst leaving a ghost.
What happens when it’s placed in a concentrated solution?
The cell will shrink since the water will move out of it. It will become flaccid then may be plasmolysed.
What happens if it is placed in a solution wih the same concentration?
No change occurs.
