Atrophy
The wasting away of a body tissue or organ.
Ectomorph
Generally have a slim build with little body fat.
Endomorph
Are heavyset with accumulations of fat.
Mesomorph
Have a muscular build.
Somatotype
Term that describes bodily physique.
Anatomical position
The reference position where the body is erect posture with the arms at the sides and palms turned forward. The head and feet are also pointing forward.
Anterior
Near the front
Apical
Near the apex (pointed end)
Basal
Near the base (wide end)
Central
Near the center/midline
Contralateral
Relating to the side of the body that is opposite to that structure
Cortical
Near the cortex region, usually the outer layer
Deep
Deeper in the tissues
Distal
Away from the center of the body or point of attachment
Inferior
At the lower end
Ipsilateral
Belonging to or occurring on the same side of the body
Lateral
At or toward the sides
Medial
At or toward the middle
Medullary
Near the medulla, usually the inner layer
Parietal
Relating to or attached to the wall of a body cavity or hollow structure
Peripheral
Relating to or situated at the edge
Posterior
Near the back
Proximal
Near the center of the body or point of attachment
Superficial
Near the surface
Superior
At the upper end
