Define international terrorism

An action in the international arena initiated by an individual or group that is NOT controlled by a nation-state

Define domestic terrorism
An action initiated by an individual or group of national within its own nation-state
Give an example of left wing domestic terrorism
SLA, FALN, DEL SOL
Give an example of right wing domestic terrorism
Militia, KKK, white aryan resistance
Define state terrorism
Actions conducted by a nation state within its own border, usually targeting the native population for control
Give an example of state terrorism
El Salvador, Cambodia, Taliban
Define old terrorism
1) Specific political, social and economic goals
2) groups clearly defined and organized structure
3) targets were symbolic (gov, religious, social order
Define new terrorism
1) changed in 1979 when Islamic radicals in Iran took hostages
2) targets are unarmed, relatively innocent, with goal of mass casualty
3) terrorist groups are loosely affiliated as are goals
4) many focused on radical religious interpretations, lone wolf strategies & mass casualties.
What is the terrorist threat
Strikes at American way of life, attacks symbols of freedom. Changes security and safety to insecurity and fear. Breaks down the fabric and social bonds of society. Terrorism plays to emotion not intellect
Middle East terrorist “a new breed”
Atypical individuals, not nirmally the concern of law enforcement, esp the leaders.

Taliban
Consists of members of the pashtun tribes, occupying parts of the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is fundamentalist Islamic movement. Came to power in 1996 and overthrown in 2092

Religion of Muslims. Believes no god but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet: Allah found islam through Muhammad

Drive unmanned aircraft flown remotely. Used for reconnaissance and armed drones cab strike against enemy targets

A regional terrorist group affiliated w al Quaeda

Rtms may be independent and some of the larger ones may be affiliated with larger transnational terrorist organizations such as al Qaeda or Islamic state

Arabic “the base” foreign terrorist organization (fto) led by Usama bin laden til 2011; currently led by ayman al zawahiri

Nuclear, biological, chemical, radiological and high explosive weapons capable of producing mass destruction

Future terrorist attacks that are so different from past experience and what analysts can reasonably foresee that they are unpredictable

Previously known as the Islamic state in Syria and the Islamic state in levant. Known for its grisly beheadings for westerners and mass executions of captured Iraqi soldiers
