A formal process used to recognize and validate an individual’s qualifications
Credential
Verification that a professional has achieved a baseline knowledge, skills, and the minimum level of competence
Certification
Earning a specific level of education, clinical practice skills, and/or passing an advanced level examination
Licensure
The legal right to practice or serve in a specific sonography role as approved by government legislation
Scope of practice
Includes the limitations of practice, the definition of the profession, and appropriate certification/credentialing
Profession

An attitude and behavior that enhances professional behaviors and upholds principles and standards
Why should a sonographer become credentialed
Verifies that a professional has achieved a baseline knowledge skills and the minimum level of competence
