Chapter 1 The Importance of Communication Flashcards
What is Communication?
Communication is the process of creating meaning through symbolic interaction
What are Symbols?
Symbols represent things, people, ideas, and events in ways that make communication possible
Linear Communication Model
Theorists made a model to represent communication.
Senders encode messages that they send to receivers, who decode the messages by assigning meaning. Kind of like a tennis match. Communicators take turns being the sender and receiver.
-The linear model shows that communication occurs in an environment that includes both current circumstances and the personal and cultural experiences each person brings to the encounter.
What is a Channel?
The method by which a message is conveyed between people
What is noise?
includes not only sounds, but any factor that interferes with effective communication
There are three types of noise
External Noise, Physiological Noise, and Psychological Noise
External Noise?
Includes factors OUTside of a person that are distracting or make hearing difficult. For example you may be distracted by a noisy lawnmower or the vibration of a phone in your pocket
Physiological Noise?
Involves biological factors that interfere with communication. It’s difficult to listen good if you are tired, or hungry, or sick.
Psychological Noise?
Refers to thoughts and feelings that distort or disrupt communication. If you believe someone dislikes you, you may perceive everything that person says in a negative way
Transactional Communication Model
Contrast to the linear view.
The Transactional Communication model depicts a process in which people send and receive messages simultaneously. For example. If you tell your mom her new haircut looks “sick,” her facial expression might tell you immediately that she is offended, even though you meant it as a compliment.
Perhaps someone yawns while you are telling a story. Even though you are a sender in these instances at the same time you are a receiver as well.
What is Feedback?
Feedback is a receiver’s perceivable response to a sender’s message
What is Intrapersonal Communication?
Intrapersonal Communication is “Communicating with oneself” It involves that little voice inside your head
What is Dynamic Communication?
Dynamic Communication is used to describe two-person interaction. Dynamic Communication can occur when people talk in person or via electronic means (text, a DM)
What is Interpersonal Communication?
Interpersonal Communication is when the people involved are part of close relationships in which they treat each other as unique individuals.
What is Small Group Communication?
Small Group Communication is when every person can participate actively with other members.
What is Organizational Communication?
Organizational Communication is when larger, more permanent collections of people engage and work to achieve goals
What is Public Communication?
Public Communication occurs when a group becomes too large for all members to contribute at one time.
