Chapter 1 Study Guide Flashcards
List the 6 of the major traits of living organisms and give an example of each.
- Organized - cells are the smallest unit in this organization where something is considered living.
- Requires material and energy - all living organisms use sunlight for energy
- Maintains an interval environment- human bodies like to keep a constant temperature of 37C
- Responds- reacts to stimuli like a human touching a hot stove
- Reproduces and develops- humans and animals
- Has an evolutionary history- animals that have adapted to their environments
Are viruses alive? Do they meet all the characteristics of life? Explain your answer
No viruses are not alive. Viruses rely on the host for energy and the host environment. Because of this they do not meet all the criteria to be considered living.
Explain how body temperature is regulated
To maintain homeostasis body temperature is regulated by the hypothalamus. Body temperature is carried through the nervous and circulatory system where the brain makes changes to stabilize temperature
Describe the general process of the scientific method
Start by making an observation, based off this information you will give an explanation for the observation in an hypothesis, from there you will test your hypothesis and turn it into data, from the data you will give your conclusion based on the results. And repeat.
Describe each step in the scientific method
- Observation- watching the natural world
- Hypothesis- explanation of observation
- Experimentation- test hypothesis
- State a conclusion- based off results of experiment
Give an example of how we use the scientific method in everyday life
The scientific method helps us identify problems, what may be causing the problem and potential solutions on how to fix that problem.
Distinguish between a control group and an experimental group
Control groups do not receive treatment where they may receive a placebo where the experimental group does. The control group is used to compare the outcomes of the experimental group.
How does resistance to antibiotics occur
Genetic mutations can cause some batteries or viruses to change and making them immune to antibiotics
List the biological levels of organization
- Atoms
- Cells
- Tissues
- Organs
- Organ systems
- Organisms
- Species
- Population
- Community
- Ecosystem
- Biosphere
Define theory
Theory is an explanation of the possibility of how something works. It’s not just ideas but theories are based of experiments and data.
What is the difference between inductive and deductive reasoning
Inductive reasoning is when you see something with your own senses
Deductive reasoning uses indirect observations
What is a double blind study
Where neither the patient or the doctor/administrator know there is an experiment being conducted
What is necessary to be a critical thinker
Things in life are not always black and white there is a lot of grey. When we think on a deeper level we are better at not only analyzing problems but think of more possible solutions and outcomes.
How is adapt different from adjust in biology? Don’t define the terms- tell me how they are different
Adaptations happen over a period of time and becomes in the DNA of the organism, a variation of genes will grow to help the animal survive where as an adjustment is something temporary that we have control over like if it’s cold or hot outside we dress appropriately
Why should people have a general knowledge of science
To have a better understating of our own bodies and how we interact with the world around us. Understating the complexities of this work may give some a better appreciation.
