Chapter 1 Section 2: The Geographer’s Craft Flashcards
Human Geography
★ The study of: The interrelationship between people, place and environment
★ How these vary: Geographically and Temporarily across and between locations
Physical Geography
The study of the processes that shape : The Earth’s surface The animal and plants that inhabit it The study of the natural features of the Earth’s surface including: Land formation Climate
Meteorology
★ The study of weather
and weather forecasting
and historical geography
★ The study of places
and human activities over time
and the various geographic factors that have shaped them
What do geographers use in their work?
Use specialized research methods:
(Direct Observation)
Used in studying the earth and the patterns of human activities that take place on its surface
Geographers:
★ Will often visit a region to collect specific info about the region and its geographic features
★ Also use remote sensing( satellite ) to study the earth using satellite images.
Mapping
Making and using maps
What do we call the geographic specialists who make and design maps?
Cartographers
What do we call cartographers work?
Cartography
How can cartographers easily show the location, features, patterns and relationships of people, places and things?
By presenting the info that they located about an area on a map
(aka making maps)
Interviewing:
What do geographers do to answer geographic questions?
Sometimes they are obliged to go and observe. Why?
To find out how people think or feel about certain places
★To examine the ways in which people’s beliefs and attitudes have led to changes in the physical environment.
★How do they obtain these info?
By interviewing. They choose a specific group of people for study, whose answers represent the whole groups
Statistics
★Some info used by the geographers are numerical (temperature degree in a certain place)
★What do geographers do?
Use computers to organize this information and present it in clear and understandable ways
Analyze the data to find patterns and trends( census data can be used to learn about the rates of population growth, age, ethnic, gender and income levels.
★What do they do after identifying all of these info? Use statistical tests to see if their ideas are correct
Technology:
What do geographers use in their work?
technological tools
satellites and computers
Satellites:
Turn around the earth in a circular motion, carrying a remote sensors, high-tech cameras and radar to gather info and images
Geographic info systems(GIS):
Computer tools that process and organize data and satellite images with other pieces of info collected by geographers and scientists
how does (history) affects and is affected by geography?
Use history to help them understand how places looked like in the past. They begin to gather info about the past of these places and the changes that happened
how does (political science) affects and is affected by geography?
Study political science to help them see how people in different places are governed
