Chapter 1 Section 1: Exploring Geography Flashcards
Section 1: Exploring Geography
Geography
is the study of the earth’s physical features and the living things humans, animals, and plants that inhabit the planet.
Geography looks at where all of these elements are located and how they relate to one another.
we use geography in?
★ In Government - for mapmaking and planing
★ In Business - for marketing and development
★ In school - for education
★ Everyday - To find our way in town or on trips, when we watch the news and weather, when we read about other countries, when we make decisions about locations for events or businesses
The world in Spatial Terms (location):
The links that places and people have to one another because of their locations
Absolute location :
The exact spot at which the place is found on the globe
Relative location:
a place based on its location with respect to other locations
Place:
A particular space with physical and human meaning
Region:
An area larger than a single city that contains unifying cultural and/or physical characteristics
3 types of regions:
★ Formal Region
★ Functional Region
★ Perceptual Region
Formal Region:
Areas in which certain characteristics are found throughout the area (countries, states and cities)
Functional Region:
A central place and the surrounding places
affected by it (Los Angeles)
Perceptual Region:
Area defined by people’s feelings and attitudes
New York City
Physical Systems: (ecosystems)
What do geographers do in their work?
★ Analyze how certain natural phenomena (volcanoes) shape the earth’s surface
★ Look how physical features interact with plant and animal life to create, support or change ecosystems
An ecosystem:
A community of plants and animals that depend on each other and their surroundings
Human Systems:
What do geographers do in their work?
★ Examine how people shape the world, settle the earth, form societies create permanent features. The movement of people, goods and ideas (migration)
★ Look at how people cooperate
to change or
control aspects of the earth to meet their needs
Environment and society:
★ Human-environment interaction or the study of the interrelationship between people and their physical environment
What do geographers do?
★ Examine the ways people use their environment
★How and why they have changed it
★What consequences result from changes
Human activities such as building wall/blockage cause changes in the physical environment
