Chapter 1: Section 1.5: Homeostasis Flashcards
Components of homeostatic system (3)
The receptor
The control center
The effector
Function of receptor AND locations
Structure that detects changed in a variable, detect stimuli. Consist of sensory nerve nerves
Function of control center AND locations
The structure that interprets input from the receptor and initiates changes through the effector. Portion of the nervous system and endocrine organ
Function of effector AND locations
The structure that brings about change to alter the stimulus. Includes most body structure: muscle and glands
Define negative feedback
Type of homeostatic control system that maintains the variable within a normal range. Produces a result opposite direction of stimulus. (Temperature Regulation)
Define positive feedback
Type of homeostatic control that moves stimulus in the same direction and continues until a climatic event occurs. (Breatfeeding and milk production)
Define homeostasis
The body’s ability to maintain a relatively stable internal environment in response to changing conditions
