Chapter 1: Scientific Method / Basics of Life Flashcards
Properties of Life
Order (complex and organized)
Reproduction
Growth and Development (inherited DNA)
Energy Processing (acquire and use, metabolize chemicals)
Regulation
Response to Environment
Evolutionary Adaptation (Natural Selection)
Levels of Organization
Biosphere Ecosystem Community Population Organism Organ system Organ Tissue Cell (functional unit of life) Organelle Molecule Atom Subatomic particle
Scientific Method: Discovery

Inductive reasoning to arrive at logical conclusion
Inductive vs Deductive Reasoning
Scientists use Inductive reasoning (specific observation to genera; conclusion - can be false) to form hypotheses and theories.
Deductive reasoning (general hypothesis tested to get specific conclusion) allows them to apply the theories to specific situations.

Cells
Structural and functional units of life
All Cells
Enclosed by membrane that regulates passage of materials, Use DNA as genetic information
Prokaryotic Cells
First to evolve, simpler, usually smaller, DNA but no nucleus
Eukaryotic Cells
Membrane enclosed organelles including nucleus with DNA, found in plants, animals fungi
