Chapter 1 (Research Methods) Flashcards
Naturalistic Observation
Observes and records subjects in it’s natural state
Pro = More Spontaneity in subjects
Con = Less control over conditions.
Laboratory Observation
Pro = More control over conditions
Con = Less spontaneity in subjects
I.e. Sleep Studies
Case Study
Involves one or many participants
In-depth over time
Not used for psychological or physiological disorders
Can’t establish cause of behavior because of small sample size
Survey and Interview
info about attitudes, beliefs, experiences and behavior
Pro = Uses large number of people
Con = Everybody lies, tell people what they want to hear
Experiment
Shows cause/effect. Tests a hypothesis
Correlation
r = Correlation
Independent Variable
What researcher manipulates
Dependent Variable
variable that is being measured or tested in an experiment. How changes in the independent variable cause changes in the dependent variable
Experimental Group
Participants exposed to the treatment of the experiment
