Chapter 1 - research Flashcards
IV
What is manipulated/changed?
DV
How is it (IV) measured?
EV
An unexpected variable that may unwontedly influence the DV/results.
Control group
Not exposed to IV
Experimental group
Exposed to IV
Participant selection - random sampling
Every member of population has an even chance at being selected.
Participant selection - convenience sampling
Selecting using the quickest and easiest means possible - most convenient.
Participant selection - convenience sampling
Selecting using the quickest and easiest means possible - most convenient.
Participant selection - stratified sampling
Population is divided into groups based on relevant characteristics and participants are selected from each groups in relevant proportion to experiment.
Sample
Subgroup of population - group that is experimented on.
Population
Group of interest to the study, from which the sample is drawn.
Experimental designs - matched participants
Same participants are in every condition of experiment.
Experimental designs - independent groups
Participants are split into two or more groups (typically control and experiment but not always).
Experimental designs - repeated measures
Participants are paired based on relevant characteristics where one is exposed toon condition and the other to the other.
Quantitive data
Data concerning numerical amounts and expressed numerically.
Qualitative data
Data of concepts that is measured or expressed non-numerically.
