Status
The importance of an individuals position in a group
Power
The extent to which an individual can control the feelings/thoughts/behaviour of others.
Types of power
- Reward
- Coercive
- Legitimate
- Referent
- Expert
- Informational
Reward power
The power to give rewards/take away punishment.
Coercive power
The power to give punishments/take away rewards.
Legitimate power
A person’s status and power in a group gives them authority.
Referent power
People want to be liked by this person/they are idolised.
Expert power
Having special knowledge/skills are needed/desired.
Informational power
Having resources/information that aren’t available anywhere else.
Group
Made up of people who interact with and influence each other as well as sharing a common purpose.
Collective
Made up of two or more people with minimal interaction
Zimbardo’s - IV
Random assignment of roles as either prisoner or prison guard.

Zimbardo’s - participants
24 male american stanford university students which came from a population of who responded to a newspaper advertisement.
Zimbardo’s - method
- Participants were assigned the role of either prisoner or prison guard.
- Prison guards had a training day with Zimbardo (experimenter) and were given uniforms
- Prisoners were arrested by real police and were given unfiorms and numbers.
- All participants were placed in mock prison.
