Pest
Any kind of living organism that causes undesirable effects
Formulant
Any component of a pest control product that is added to the product and that is not an active ingredient
Formulation
A mixture of active ingredients and formulants
Adjuvant
A substance added to a pesticide mixture to enhance the pesticides qualities
Common name
Refers to the active ingredient
Chemical name
Name of the chemical structure of the active ingredient. Usually on the MSDS sheet
Registration number
Identifies a pesticide by its product, name, name of manufacturer, type of formulation, concentration of active ingredients, and the class of pesticide

The product name and the common name
Acaricide
Spiders, ticks, & mites
Molluscicide
Slugs and snails
Avicide
Birds
Nematicide
Nematodes and roundworms
Piscicide
Fish
Systemic pesticides
Control their targets by entering and then moving through the organism
Contact pesticides
Control their targets by direct contact
Selective pesticides
Affect their target pest but very few other organisms
Non-slective pesticides
Affect the target pest and many other organisms
Residual pesticides
Affect organisms for some time after they have been applied
Non-residual pesticides
Affect organisms at the time of application but not for long afterwards
Attractants
Attract pests to traps
Defoliants
Cause plants to lose their leaves
Desiccants
Cause pests to loose water and dry out
Feeding stimulants
Added to insecticides to cause pests to feed on treated material
