Chapter 1: Part 1 Flashcards
What is a motor skill?
The ability to voluntarily move the body to perform a task
What are the three types of motor skill classification?
Movement precision, type of movement, predictability of environment
What are the two different types of movement precision?
Gross and fine motor skills
What are the three different types of movement?
Discrete, serial, and continuous motor skills
What are the two different motor skills related to predictability of the environment?
Closed and open motor skills
What are gross motor skills and provide an example?
Motor skills which involve the recruitment of large muscle groups associated with movements requiring less precision, such as sumo wrestling
What are fine motor skills and provide an example?
The cooperative use of smaller muscles associated with movements requiring precision, such as throwing a dart
What is a sporting example of both a gross and fine motor skill?
Leg spin bowling in cricket. as the bowling action is a gross motor skill, whilst the use of the fingers and wrist to spin the ball is a fine motor skill
What are discrete motor skills and provide an example?
A movement which has a clear beginning and end, such as a basketball free throw (picking up ball/releasing ball from hands)
What are serial motor skills and provide an example?
The combination of several discrete motor skills performed in a sequence, such as a gymnastics floor routine
What are continuous motor skills and provide an example?
Movements which have no definitive beginning or end, whereby the actual motor skill is constant in nature, such as a marathon race
What are closed motor skills and provide an example?
Movements which are self-paced, where the performer has the greatest control over their performance environment (weather/playing surface/opposition), such as an indoor individual diving routine
What are open motor skills and provide an example?
Movements which are performed in a less predictable performance environment, where the conditions are constantly changing and the performer has limited control over external conditions, such as white-water kayaking
What are fundamental motor skills?
Skills required for the foundation of sport specific and movement skills, which should be learnt from an early age, and become specialised asa sport specific skills later in an individual’s development
What is likely to happen if your fundamental motor skills are underdeveloped?
You are less likely to involve yourself in specific sports that rely on these motor skills
