Chapter 1 LO1 Principal Fossil Fuels Flashcards
What is the Formation of coal. 2 Problems associated with the combustion of coal.
Formed from dead remains of plants, they then accumulate on the ground over time. Increasing weight overtime turns remain to peat. Over hundreds of millions of years it increases in temperature and is then mined by humans.
Problem 1: Releases harmful coal gas which harms environment.
Problem 2: Unreliable, Cannot be replenished in a human lifetime.
What is the formation of crude oil and natural gas. 2 Problems associated with these fossil fuels.
Formed from dead remains of sea organisms. These sea organisms die and settle on the bottom of the oceans. Remains and sediment gather on top causing an increase in pressure and temperature over time. Over hundreds of millions of years these pressures and temperatures are developed enough to form crude oil. Natural gas can then be tapped off crude oil in crude oil wells
Problem 1: When burnt harmful to environment.
Problem 2: Unreliable, cannot be replenished in a human lifetime.
State the 3 Fossil fuels Used on
earth
Coal
Crude Oil
Natural gas
What percentage of the world’s energy demands was met by fossil fuels in the 1960s? What is the percentage as of 2015?
1960: 94%
2015: 80%
Term of a Fossil Fuel
Fossil fuel: Fuel consisting of the remains of organisms preserved in rocks in the Earth’s crust with high carbon and hydrogen content.
Term of a renewable energy
source
Renewable energy source: A form of energy derived from natural sources that do not use up natural resources to harm the environment.
