What are the four parts of medical terms?
word root, prefix, suffix, combining vowel
The foundation of a medical term, which provides the general meaning of a word (may be a body system, body part, or action)
word root
Part of a medical term that makes possible the pronunciation of long terms (most often the vowel ‘o’),
Used in two ways:
-between word root & suffix
*only if suffix begins with a consonant
-between two word roots
*whether suffix begins with a consonant
or vowel
combining vowel
Added to the front of a medical term to give information about location, number of parts, or time (frequency)
*Not included in every medical term
