Purpose of BABOK
define profession of business analysis/ provide a set of commonly accepted practices.
Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring
tasks performed to organize/coordinate efforts of business analysts and stakeholders. Tasks produce outputs that are used as key inputs/guidelines for other tasks. [step used to organize information]
Elicitation and Collaboration
tasks performed to prepare for/conduct elicitation (requirement/realization) activities and confirm the results obtained. Communication with stakeholders once information is assembled + ongoing collaboration. [use information gained from previous step to realize how to obtain goals and execute with stakeholders].
Requirements Life Cycle Management
tasks performed to manage/maintain requirements/design information from inception to retirement. Tasks describe establishing meaningful relationships between related requirements/designs and assessing, analyzing/gaining consensus on proposed changes to requirements/designs. [maintain step 2 with new information].
Strategy Analysis
work that must be performed to collaborate w/ stakeholders in order to identify a need of strategic/tactical importance, enable enterprise to address need/ align resulting strategy for the change with higher/lower level strategies.
Requirements Analysis and Design Definition (RADD)
tasks to structure and organize requirements discovered during elicitation activities, specify and model requirements/designs, validate and verify information, identify solution options meet business needs, estimate potential value that could be realized for each solution option.
Solution Evaluation
assess performance of and value delivered by a solution in use by the enterprise, recommend removal of barriers or constraints that prevent full realization of the value.
Business Analysis
the practice of enabling change in an enterprise by defining needs and recommending solutions that deliver value to stakeholders.
• Enables an enterprise to articulate needs and the rationale for change, to design and describe solutions that can deliver value.
Business Analyst
any person who performs business analysis tasks described in BABOK, no matter job title/organizational role.
Task
discrete piece of work that may be performed formally or informally as part of business analysis.
Purpose (task)
short description of reason for a business analyst to perform task, value created through performing the task.
Description (task)
explains in greater detail what the task is, why it is performed, what it should accomplish.
Inputs (task)
information consumed or transformed to produce an output and represent information necessary for a task to begin.
Elements (task)
key concepts needed to understand how to perform the task. Elements are not mandatory as part of performing task, usage is dependent on ba approach.
Guidelines and Tools (task)
resources required to transform input into output. Provides instructions on why/how to undertake task. Tool is used to undertake task.
