Chapter 1 Intro to Physical Science Flashcards
What is Science?
A way of learning about the natural world.
What is a Qualitative Observation?
An Observation that deals with descriptions.
What is a Quantitative Observation?
An Observation that deals with numbers or an amount.
What is Chemistry?
The study of the properties of matter and how matter changes.
What is Physics?
The study of matter and energy and how they interact.
What is the Scientific Method?
It is a way to ask and answer scientific questions by
making observations and doing experiments.
What is Technology?
How people change the world around them to meet their needs and solve problems.
What is a System?
Contains parts that work Together.
What is a Hypothesis?
An educated guess about your question based off your current knowledge.
What is the Scientific Law?
A statement that describes what scientists expect to happen every time under a particular set of conditions.
What are the steps of the scientific Method?
State problem, Gather Info, Form a Hypothesis, Test the Hypothesis, Analyze data, Draw Conclusions, the if hypothesis supported repeat from test the hypothesis several times. If Hypothesis not supported, go to form hypothesis and modify.
What kind of questions can be tested with the scientific method?
Scientific questions
What are the skills used to learn about the world?
Observing, Inferring, Predicting, Classifying, and Making Models.
What is the difference between and independent variable and a dependent variable?
Independent - the one variable purposely changed to test a hypothesis.
Dependent - factor that changes in response to the independent variable.
Why is it Important to have a controlled Experiment?
Manipulating more than variable at a time can lead to an injury or change the results of your experiment.
