Chapter 1 - Intro to Inorganic Chemistry Flashcards
Compare the types of bonds in organic vs inorganic compounds.
Organic: #bonds ≤ 3 for carbon
Inorganic: #bonds >4 possible, metal-metal, metal-carbon bonds etc
Compare the role/bonds to hydrogen in organic vs inorganic compounds
Organic: Hydrogen bonded to single carbon
Inorganic: Hydrogen can be a bridging atom between other atoms
Compare the orbitals seen in organic vs inorganic compounds
Organic: s, p orbitals for carbon, max coordination# = 4
Inorganic: have d orbitals as well, max coordination # can be 5,6,7…etc
Organometallic complexes
Carbon directly bonded to metal
Coordination complexes
Metals in center with ligands (anions or neutral molecules) bonded to them (e.g. XeF4)
Sandwich compounds
Aromatic rings = bread, with Fe/metals in the middle as the “jelly”. Aromatic ring bonded to metals via π orbitals.
Cluster compounds
