Chapter 1 General Function And Components Flashcards
What is blood?
Blood is a vital fluid tissue that circulates within the cardiovascular system.
What is the total blood volume in a 70kg man?
5600ml
What are the main functions of the blood?
- Transportation
- Defense.
- Hemostatic
- Homeostatic
What happens in transportation?
Blood acts as a carrier medium for many substances such as glucose, oxygen (O2), carbon dioxide (Co2), hormones, and final metabolism products.
What happens in defense?
White blood cells provide the body with powerful defenses against invading microorganisms and tumors.
What happens in Hemostatic?
Substances in the blood that act together to stop bleeding when a blood vessel is injured.
What happens in Homeostatic
Blood performs an important function in keeping the composition of the internal environment constant.
Blood is composed of two main parts:
Plasma and Cellular elements.
What is plasma?
It is the fluid part of the blood around 55% of total blood volume.
What are Cellular Elements?
It is the remaining 45% of the blood volume.
What do the cellular elements consist of?
Red blood cells or corpuscles, white blood cells (wbc’s), and plasma (thrombocytes).
