Q

Head

A

4 microns long and contains:
1. Condensed nucleus which carries hereditary material of the father (22 autosomal and X or Y sex chromosomes) mostly covered by acrosomal cap that has enzymes that facilitate penetration of the coverings of the ova (fertilization).
2. Minimal cytoplasm.
3. Cell membrane.

Q

Tail

A
  1. 45 microns long.
  2. Composed of axial filament with cell membrane around most of it.
  3. The tail directs the movement of the sperm towards the ovum, then helps fertilization.

16
Q

What does the ovum consist of?

A
  1. Secondary oocyte
    - Cell membranes
  2. Zona pellucida
  3. Corona radiate
17
Q

Secondary oocyte

A

A mature oocyte that carries:
1. Nucleus that has hereditary material of the mother (22 sutosomes and X chromosomes).
2. Large cytoplasm, which is the initial nutrition source of the zygote.

18
Q

Zona pellucida

A

A glycoprotein coat around the oocyte. It Carrie’s sperm receptors that attract sperms prior to fertilization.

19
Q

Corona radiate

A

Outer cover that is formed of follicular cells derived from the ovary.
