Where are artefacts stored?
Museums (written documents in libraries and archives)
What is archaeology?
- the study of things people have left behind them
- archaeology is used to find out about pre-history
What do archaeologists do?
Dig, seek and study ancient artefacts
What were the three pre-historic periods?
Stone age
Bronze age
Iron age
What is stratigraphy?
Stratigraphy is the study of the earths layers
- most ancient objects are buried deep beneath the ground
- soil - plant and tree remains bury there artefacts
- therefore the deeper the object the older it is
What is Aerial Photography?
- photographs taken from the air often show ancient remains that are not visible from the ground
- crops and grass grow differently is there is an ancient building/ditch beneath it ; crop marks
Who are historians?
People who study and write about the past
What is a primary source?
-a primary source is a source written or made at the time an event took place e.g. Original buildings, newspapers, films
What is a secondary source?
A secondary source is second hand evidence
-written or made by someone who did not witness the events as they happened e.g. School textbook
What must historians do?
- consider that sources may be biased or unreliable
- propaganda might be used
- present their information in an objective way
What is an artefact?
A man made object
What does biased mean?
One sided, a non reliable source because the person/organisation who made the source feels strongly about something
What is propaganda?
A source used to promote the idea of a particular organisation
What is a census?
A census is a survey of population numbers in a country at a particular time

The time before written records were kept
