Health
is a state of complete physical, social and mental wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease of infirmity.
Wellbeing
can be described as the state of being healthy, happy and content. It includes the presence of positive emotions and resilience, satisfaction with life, a sense of fulfilment and positive functioning.
Health and wellbeing
the state of a person’s physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual existence, characterised by an equilibrium in which the individual feels happy, healthy, capable and engaged
Optimal health and wellbeing
is the best possible state of an individual’s health and wellbeing for their age or personal circumstances.
Disease
is a physical or mental disturbance involving symptoms, dysfunction or tissue damage. Disease is associated with diagnosis.
Chronic condition
any disease or condition that lasts a long time
Illness
is the state of feeling unwell or being in poor health, often due to disease or injury.

Physical health and wellbeing
relate to the functioning of the body and its systems. It includes the physical capacity to perform daily activities or tasks.
Characteristics of optimal physical health and wellbeing
- Healthy body weight
- freedom from illness disease and injury
- ability to complete physical tasks adequately
Social health and wellbeing
relate to the state and quality of the interactions and relationships that an individual has with other people. It includes the ability to manage or adapt appropriately to different social situations.
Characteristics of optimal social health and wellbeing
- supportive network of friends and well-functioning family
- productive relationships with other people
- ability to manage and adapt appropriately to different social situations.
Emotional health and wellbeing
relate to the ability to express feelings in a positive way. It is the ability to recognise, understand and effectively manage emotions.
Characteristics of optimal emotional health and wellbeing
- recognise and understand the range of emotions
- have a high level of resilience
- effectively respond to and manage emotions.
Mental health and wellbeing
the current state of wellbeing relating to the mind or brain and its ability to think and process information.
Characteristics of optimal mental health and wellbeing
- low level of stress and anxiety
- positive self-esteem and high levels of confidence (how a person feels about themselves)
- positive thought patterns
Spiritual health and wellbeing
relate to ideas, beliefs, values and ethics that arise in the minds and conscience of human beings.
Characteristics of optimal spiritual health and wellbeing
- a sense of belonging and connection to the world
- positive meaning and purpose in life
- developed personal values and beliefs
Communicable diseases
infectious diseases that are transmitted from the environment, including through the air, water, food and other infected organisms
Dimensions of health and wellbeing
the components that make up an individual’s overall health and wellbeing.
Equilibrium
a state of balance and/or calmness
Infirmity
the quality or state of being weak or ill often associated with old age
resource individually
resource nationally (in a country)
resource globally (all countries)
