Q

What is an infarction and why does it occur?

A

Infarction = death of neural tissue (necrosis) due to lack of o2, caused by blood deficiency.

6
Q

What is an embolic stroke and what causes it?

A

When a moving arterial debri (embolus) causes a blockage, but it continues moving through the artery. Caused by an embolism.

Q

What is a thrombotic stroke and what causes it?

A

A collection of arterial debri causes a blockage in an artery (thrombus) and it remains blocked. Caused by a thrombosis.

Q

What is a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)? What causes it and how long does it last?

A

Temporary disruption in blood supply. Caused by small emboli in the artery that then breaks up and dissolves. Lasts >24 hours; typically >30 mins.

16
Q

T/F TIAs usually cause severe aphasia.

A

False. Mild -usually temporary.

17
Q

Ischemic strokes typically have a slower recovery process than hemorrhagic strokes.

A

False - greater & sooner. Noticeable recovery in first few weeks, max. recovery of language @ 3mos, full neuro recovery usually by 6mos.

18
Q

T/F. Residual effects are typically seen in hemorrhagic strokes.

A

True. Slow recovery for the first few weeks. 4 - 8 weeks = more rapid recovery. Then slows down @ 8 wks & effects are visible.

19
Q

Why are the first 4 to 8 weeks slower to recover for hemorrhagic stroke patients?

A

Because the blood is being absorbed out of the brain.

20
Q

What are neoplasms?

A

intracranial tumors.

21
Q

What are some other neurological causes of communication disorders other than strokes.

A

Brain trauma, neoplasms, bacterial infections, toxemia, nutritional disorders.

22
Q

Wernicke’s encephalopathy is an example of a bacterial infection.

A

False- example of communication disorder caused by a nutritional disorder.
