Ch. 7 Flashcards
What variables affect candidacy for treatment?
Severity of brain injury, medical/physical conditions, PT’s motivation, response to trial therapy, funding
Name people on a treatment team.
SLP, OT, PT, Neurologist, Psychoneurologist, rehab physician, recreational therapist, social worker, dietician, clinical psychologist
Describe stages of early therapy
Around 15-30 minute sessions; depends on how much the patient can tolerate; you can see them twice a day, for 30 minutes each
Describe BID vs QID
BID-twice a day
QID-four times a day
Describe format of early therapy
Open with casual talk -> easy tasks -> goal-directed work -> cool-down
What is the resource allocation model?
Each of us has a finite amount of resources available for mental operations: be sure to operate within the pt’s resources because brain injury reduces available resources; performance declines if demands outweigh the resources
Talk about complexity in tasks
As complexity increase, performances declines. Simplifying tasks in aids performance
What is stimulus manipulation?
Increasing intensity and salience helps pts.
Use clear stimuli; don’t be vague/ambiguous
Cues are really important; ultimately want to teach them self-cueingo
What is response manipulation?
Complex responses are longer; familiarity means a better/more accurate response; delay so that it’s functional communication eventually; and be patient so that they can have adequate processor time
What are 3 different approaches to treatment?
Relative level of impairment approach: figure out strengths and weaknesses and then build on their strengths; make pt as functional as possible
Fundamental processes approach: identify underlying problems and then treat those problems
Functional abilities approach: emphasize skills in daily life
-combination of all 3 is usually used
What should you keep in mind for providing instructions and feedback?
Instruction should be clear and concise; don’t give the pt too much info; provide incentives tailored to the pt for behavior management; feedback is important in new tasks and then you want to gradually fade it as the task gets familiar
What levels do you wanna work towards for accurate and immediate responses?
Want to work towards a 60-80% accuracy level; may even need 90-95% accuracy for d/c; working a high level is good because one or more incorrect responses increases the probability of more wrong responses
List the 8 methods for generalization in daily life
Natural maintaining contingencies; daily life examples; loose training where stimulus condition is allowed to vary; sequential modification (training in all contexts) ; where generalization is desired; using normal contingencies (delay) ; common stimuli; mnemonic devices for aiding in memory; training generalization
