Chapter 1: Combustion Flashcards
What is a fuel?
A substance that’s stored energy
What is combustion?
Another name for burning, an exothermjc reaction (releasing energy into the surroundings)
What are the 3 components of the fire triangle
Heat, oxygen and fuel
What is the chemical reaction for a hydrogen fuel cell?
Hydrogen+oxygen -> water
How is acid rain formed?
Sulphur oxide is carried up with water vapour and dissolved into the rain water and falls as acid rain
What are the main causes of acid rain?
Cars, factories, volcanoes
What is the test for hydrogen?
A squeaky pop
What’s the test for CO2?
Limewater turns cloudy if present
Test for oxygen?
A growing splint relights
How does complete combustion happen?
Hydrogen atoms combine with oxygen to make water vapour, then the carbon atoms combine with oxygen to make carbon dioxide. The maximum amount of energy is released
What is mostly natural gas and what’s the reaction for this?
Methane,
Methane+oxygen-> carbon dioxide+ water
