Chapter 1 Cells Flashcards
What are organisms?
They are living things
What is the basic unit of life that makes up all organisms?
The cell
What is the genetic code all organisms have?
DNA
What surrounds all cells?
The cell membrane
What is a Prokaryote?
It is the simplest cells, but they dont have a nucleas or membrane bound organelles
Give example of Prokaryotes
Bacteria
What are more complex cells called?
Eukaryotes
Name examples of a Eukaryotes
Plants
Animals
Fungi
Protists
What can organisms be grouped by?
The number of cells it has
Name two groups of organisms and define them
Unicellular-organisms with 1 cell
Multicellular-organisms with many specialized cells
Name 2 types of reproduction
Sexual-involves 2 parents and wont br identical to offspring
Asexual- involves 1 parent and is identical to offspring
Nme 2 ways that organisms grow
1: they produce more cells
2: they enlarge the old cells
What does DNA stand for?
Deoxribose nucleic acid
What is a fertilized egg called?
A zygote
How does an autotroph get its food?
They make it
How does a photoautotroph get its food?
It uses sunlight to make its food
Example:plants
How does a chemoautotroph get its food?
It uses chemicals(iron and sulfur) as energy to produce the food
Can a heterotrophs make its food?
No, it eats other organisms
Example:Humans
Name three groups of heterotrophs and describe what they eat
1-Herbivores- plant eaters
2-Carnivores-meat eaters
3-Omnivores-plant and meat eaters
What is Metabolism?
All the chemical reactions that happen in an organism
What is Homeostasis?
It is keeping the internal environment safe for all life to live there
Give 8 levels of life and state where life begins
1-Atoms. 5-Tissues
2-Molecules. 6-Organs
3-Organelles. 7-System
4-Cells-LIFE STARTS HERE 8-Organisms
What is biology?
Biology is the study of all living things
What is homestasis?
Keeping the internal environment of the cell or organism within the ranges of life
What is a cytoplasm?
The gel found in all cells
What is an organelles?
The cells that all have different jobs in the organism
What does DNA stand for?
Deoxyribose nucleic acid
Explain what the biosphere is
It is all thungs living and nonliving
