Chapter 1 Blood Supply Flashcards
Main artery of the hear
Aorta
4 branches of the aortic arch
Common carotid arteries (2) & and subclavian arteries (2)
2 branches of the common carotid arteries
Internal and external carotid arteries that pass through the base of the skull and enter brain via dura mater and the subarachnoid space
External carotid artery
Supplies blood to the facial muscles
Internal carotid artery
Major supplier of blood to the brain
2 branches of the internal carotid artery
Anterior cerebral artery & middle cerebral artery
Anterior cerebral artery
Supplies middle portion of frontal and parietal lobes as well as basal ganglia and corpus callosum
Damage to the anterior cerebral artery
Can cause cognitive deficits (impaired reasoning, judgment, and concentration, often described as prefrontal lobe symptoms)
Middle cerebral artery
Supplies entire lateral surface of cortex, including major regions of frontal lobe, and major areas concerned with sensory and motor functions and speech, language and hearing functions
Damage to the middle cerebral artery
Frequent cause of stroke and aphasias, contralateral hemiplegia, impaired sense of touch
Branches of the subclavian arteries
Vertebral arteries that supply blood to the spinal cord and moves up to the level of the pons
Vertebral arteries join together to form…
Basilar artery
Branches of the basilar artery
Basilar artery divides into 2 posterior cerebral arteries which supply blood to the lower lateral portions of the temporal lobe as well as the middle lateral portions of the occipital lobes
Joining of the 2 carotid and 2 vertebral arteries
Circle of Willis
Circle of Willis
The circle of Willis provides a common blood supply to various cerebral branches
Blockage below circle results in minimal damage
Blockage after or above circle is bad
