Chapter 1 - Basic Anatomical Terminology Flashcards
What is ‘anterior’?
Location of bodily segment towards the front of the body.
What is ‘posterior’?
Opposite of anterior and describes location of bodily segment towards the rear of the body.
What is ‘inferior’?
Lower than eg. The hip is inferior to the shoulder.
What is ‘superior’?
Location of bodily segment above that of the other e.g. Hip is superior to the knee
What is ‘medial’?
Bodily segment is closer, or moves towards, the middle of the body. Eg. The shoulder can rotate medially to bring the arms and hands closer to the bodies mid line
What is ‘lateral’?
Opposite of medial and describes the location of a bodily segment towards the outside of another eg. Movement towards the outside of the body
What does ‘proximal’ mean?
Describes the location of a bodily segment being closer to the centre of the body than another
What is ‘distal’?
Location of an object being further away from the body’s centre than another.
What is ‘supination’?
Bodily segment facing upwards.
What is ‘pronation’?
Bodily segments facing downwards
What is ‘superficial’?
Close to the surface of the skin.
What do we mean by ‘deep’?
Away from the surface of the skin.
What is the ‘Sagittal plane’?
Divides the body from left to right. All flexion and extension takes place in this plane.
What is the ‘transverse plane’?
Divides the body into a superior and inferior position.
What is ‘frontal plane’?
Divides the body from back to front. Sometimes called the ‘coronal’ plane.
