Chapter 1- Atomic Structure Flashcards
Atom
Atoms are tiny particles which make up everything. From the oxygen we breathe to any material in our home
Atoms are the building blocks of everything
Element
A substance which contains only one type of atom eg. Chlorine
Compound
A substance which contains two or more different types of atoms chemically joined togetherness eg.water
Mixture
Two or more different types of atoms that are not chemically joined together eg. Seawater
Mass and charge
Mass of: Proton : 1 Neutron: 1 Electron : 1/2000 Charge: Proton: +1 Neutron: 0 Electron: -1
Mass number
Number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus
To get the number of neutrons you..
Subtract the atomic number away from the atomic mass
Shorthand electronic configuration for:
Sodium : 2,8,1
Potassium 2,8,8,1
Lithium: 2,1
Rubidium: 2,8,8,8,8, 3
Remember: electron edition
Remember! That the number of electrons always equal the number of protons
Maximum number of electrons per shell
First shell: maximum no. Of electrons= 2
Second shell: maximum no. Of electrons: 8
Third shell: maximum no. Of electrons: 8
The arrangement of electrons
Around the nucleus there are several shells or orbits that hold the electrons. Electrons have a negative charge. The nucleus has protons and neutrons in it. Due to the nucleus holding the protons, it’s positively charged
_______________ charged protons are attracted to __________________ charged ___________
Ans:
Positively charged protons are attracted to negatively charged electrons
This attraction between protons and electrons mean….
This attraction means that electrons will try to get a shell as close to the nucleus as much as possible.
