Suffix

A

Added to the end of a base to make meaningful sense
Makes no sense on its own
Can have multiple suffixes on a word
Different suffixes can have the same meaning

Prefix

A
Added to the end of the base
Makes not sense on its own
Adds extra or modified the meaning of the base
Derived from adverbs and prepositions
Not an essential part of a word

Combining vowel

A

Adds nothing to the meaning
Often an “o”
Considered to be added to the end of the base, not the beginning of the suffix

How to recognize word parts

A

Identify all parts
Find the base and suffix first (at least one of both)
Find the leftovers
Make sure nothing is leftover
Write the meaning of each part to build up a definition

Building the definition

A

Begin with the suffix (figure out if it is a noun, adjective, or verb)
Identify the prefix (if there isn’t one go to the next step)
Identify the base
Add words to make your definition make sense
General rule: suffix -> prefix (if any) -> base
