Chapter 1 Flashcards
What are the 2 different property types?
> Intrinsic
> Attributive
What does intrinsic and attributive mean?
Intrinsic: Natural properties
Attributive: A unnatural property of the material usually caused by humans.
What are 3 intrinsic properties?
> Bulk Mechanical properties
Bulk Non-mechanical Properties
Surface properties
What are 3 attributive properties?
> Price and availability
Productions properties
Aesthetic properties
What is an intrinsic property?
This is a property that is independent of how much of the material there is or external factors
What is an attributive property?
This is a property that is external and dependent on external factors. e.g. finishing and manufacturing
What is tribology?
The study of materials
What is a bulk mechanical properties?
Physical properties that independent on the shape and size of a material.
What are all the bulk mechanical properties and the associated definitions?
> Density - Mass per unit volume
Elastic Moduli - How easily a material can stretch
Strength - The ability of a material to withstand a force/pressure
Creep - Deformation slowly overtime due to persistant mechanical stresses
Toughness - The ability to withstand adverse conditions
What is a surface property?
Properties that affect the functional aspect of a material
What are 4 Surface properties?
> Corrosion
Oxidation
Friction
Wear
What is a non-mechanical bulk property?
Properties that do not relate to the physical behavior of the material
What are 4 Non-mechanical Bulk properties?
> Thermal
Electrical
Optical
Magnetic
What are 5 Economic properties?
> Cost
Supply of the material
Is the material sensitive to the public eye (Is the way that is it sourced problematic or controversial)
Is the material supplied by a sole provider or is there competition (Price fixing, negotiation)
Is the material available locally
What are 6 Manufacturing properties?
> How easy is it to manufacture
Time
Cost
Effort (does it require specialist equipment)
How sensitive is the material to the manufacturing properties
Does the manufacturing change the properties of the material
