Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is Biology?
Scientific study of living things
Biology is derived from 2 greek words Bios and Logus, which each mean?
Bios means life and logus means science
What is the basic structural and functional unit of life?
Cells
Major difference between Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes?
Eukaryotes have a nucleus and Prokaryotes dont
What is a chromosome?
A structure that contains DNA
How are chromosomes lined up in Prokaryotes vs Eukaryotes?
Prokaryotes are lined up Circular while Eukaryotes are lined up Linear
What are Chromosomes composed of?
DNA and Proteins ( Histone for Eukaryotes and non-histone Prokaryotes)
What is DNA?
Molecule that carries genetic information for growth, development and reproduction
What is a gene?
Specific sequence of DNA that codes for a specific protein
Chromosomes are located in what organelle in a eukaryotic cell? Prokaryotic cell?
Eukaryotic cell is located in Nucleus and Prokaryotes are located in Nucleoid
What is transcription?
Synthesis of mRNA from DNA
What is translation?
Synthesis of Proteins from mRNA
What is the product of gene expression?
A new functional protein
The DNA structure is a?
Double Helix
Both strands run?
Antiparallel
What are the two major processes in the ecosystem?
Energy Flow and Chemical Cycling
What is the major source of energy in the earth?
Sun
During energy transformation, what energy is released?
ATP
Explain Mutualism?
Both organism benefit from each other i.e. “mutual”
Explain Commensalism?
One organism is benefited (commensal) and the other organism is not affected
Explain Parasitism?
One organism is benefited (i.e. the parasite) and one organism is hurt (i.e. the host)
What are the three Domains?
Bacteria, Archea, and Eukarya
Which domains are unicellular or multicellular?
Bacteria are Unicellular, Archea are Unicellular, Eukarya Unicellular and Multicellular
List the 4 Domain under Eukarya
Plantae, Animalia, Fungi, and Protista
