Why is it called the Sound of the Shell?
Because the shell is what unifies the boys and group. The sound represents unity while the conch is civilization
What is Ralph’s attitude towards Piggy at first?
He sees him as a nuisance.
Why is Ralph elected chief?
He was the first boy to call all of the others together. There seems to be a quiet appeal about Ralph that makes others contented.
What is the scar?
It is the mark on the island that the plane made when it crashed. It is referred to the scar because it was a man-made mark rather than the act of nature.
What do Piggy, Simin, and the littlun with the birthmark have in common?
They are all outcasts in their own ways. piggy is immediately pegged as nerdy. Simon because a laughing stock because he always faints. The little boy has a birthmark.
How is jack presented to the reader?
Jack enters the story leading a pack of boys in black cloaks. The reader instantly thinks of him as the antagonist. jack shows some vulnerability by his acceptance towards ralph being chief, but retains his stern authority by continuing to lead the choirboys. In the beginning, the reader is confused on who Jack really is.
How is piggy revealed to be in the “Adult World”?
His aunt shelters him, which can be shown through how he says: “my aunt wont let me swim on account of my ass-mar”. We can infer that he spends no time playing, but dealing with real time adult situations, therefore making him think like one too.
