Chapter 1 Flashcards
Characteristics of living things:
1) Cells
2) organized and complex
3) Reproduction
4) Respond to stimulus
5) Require energy
6) Exchange materials with environment
7) Development and growth
8) DNA - genetic material of living things
9) Regulation
Biology
Study of life
Physiology
Function
Anatomy
Structure
Four kinds of tissue:
Epithelial, muscle, connective, nervous
Epithelial tissue
Lines things
Muscle tissue
Work together to move things
Connective tissue
Connect one type of tissue to another
Nervous tissue
Electrical signals
Coronal
Cut perpendicular with ground from ear to ear
Cut face off
Transverse
Cut parallel with ground
Midsaggital
Cut perpendicular with ground
Superior
(Cranial)
Above
Inferior
(Caudal)
Below
Ventral
(Anterior)
Front of body
(Stomach side (in front) of four legged animals or Dolphins)
Dorsal
(Posterior)
Back of body
(Back side of (behind) four legged animals or Dolphins)
Medial
Toward center of body
Midline
Lateral
Away from midline
Intermediate
Between medial and lateral structures
Proximal
Closer to point of attachment of limb or trunk
Distal
Farther to point of attachment of limb or trunk
Superficial
(External)
Toward surface of body
Deep
(Internal)
Away from surface
Axial region
Head, neck and trunk
Appendicular region
Arms and legs
Serous membrane
Allows frictionless movement
Surround the organs in the ventral cavities
Dual-layered
Folded in on itself
Parietal and visceral
Parietal serous membrane
Fused to cavity wall
Visceral serous membrane
Membrane nearest the organs (aka viscera)
Thoracic cavity compartments:
Pleural cavities (2)
Mediastinum
Pericardial
Homeostasis
1) Body’s ability to maintain relatively stable conditions even though outside environment changes continuously.
2) Dynamic state of equilibrium.
3) Body is in homeostasis when it’s needs are met and it is functioning smoothly.
Negative feedback
- common mechanism of regulation
- causes variable to change in opposite direction of initial change
Ex. Thermostat
Positive feedback
- less common mechanism of regulation
- causes variable to be enhanced in direction of initial change
Ex. Contractions, breastfeeding
Gross anatomy
Examining large structures
Organ Systems
Groups of organs that function together in a coordinated manner
