What is elevation?
Elevation is the height above sea level of a point on earth’s surface.
What is topography?
Topography is the shape of the land. An area’s topography may be flat, sloping, hilly, or mountainous. An area’s topography includes the area’s elevation, relief, and landforms.
What is relief?
Relief is the difference in elevation between the highest and the lowest points of an area.
What are landforms?
A landform is a feature of topography, such as a hill or valley,formed by the processes that shape earth’s surface. Different landforms have different combinations of elevation and relief.
What are plains?
Plains are landforms made up of nearly or gently rolling land with low relief.
What is a coastal plain?
A coastal plain is a plain that lies along a sea coast. Coastal plains have both low elevation and low relief. In North America, a coastal plain extends around the continent’s eastern and southeastern shores.
What is an interior plain?
A plain that lies away from the coast is called an interior plain. Interior plains have low relief, but the elevation can vary. The broad interior plains of North America re called the Great Plains.
What is a mountain?
A mountain is a landform with high elevation and high relief.
What is a mountain range?
A mountain range is a group of mountains that are closely related in size, shape, and age.
What is a mountain system?
The different mountain ranges in an area make up a mountain system.the Bitterroot Mountains are a mountain range of the mountain system Rocky Mountains. They consist of mountains and mountain ranges.
What is a mountain belt?
A mountain belt is a group of mountain systems. It consists mountains, mountain ranges, and mountain systems.
What is a plateau?
A landform that has high elevation and a more or less level surface called a plateau. A plateau is rarely perfect on top. Streams and rivers may cut into the plateau’s surface. For example, the Columbia River that runs through the Columbia Plateau slices through this plateau.
What is a landform region?
A landform region is a large area of land where the topography is made up mainly of one type of landform.
