Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is “Settler Imaginary”?
Settler Imaginary refers to the applied definition and understanding of what an indigenous person is. It is how they imagine them.
How does the settler imaginary affect our daily lives?
The concept underpins and maintains common assumptions and understanding which allow us to carry out collective practices that make up our lives.
What is Bias?
Bias are beliefs which are not founded upon known facts applied to something.
How are biases created?
Biases are formed consciously or unconsciously due to the consumption of TV media, written materials, or discourse amongst friends and family that tend to guide and affect information processing.
What is privilege?
An institutional set of benefits granted to those who share commonalities with those in power.
How does white privilege manifest and affect others?
It often translates to the ability to make decisions that affect everyone, without implicit concern or input from others.
How does disassociation from ancestral actions affect the current indigenous relations.
This frames indigenous history as an uncaused tragedy, rather than an injustice caused by dominant society. This drives an implicit denial of how historical factors have affected current conditions.
