Basics
Pest
Any living thing that has an undesirable impact on something that is important to us
Examples of Pests
A pest can be a bug or a plant or an animal
Pesticide
Any substance or mixture used to kill pests or prevent or reduce damage
Pest Control devices
Any mechanical (non chemical) instrument used to trap, destroy, repel or mitigate a pest. Ex yellow sticky traps, scarecrows
Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
A pest management strategy where we combine all available techniques necessary into a unified program to control pests in a way that reduces pest damage and minimizes adverse affects
Pesticide Use
All parts of the pesticide process: the transport and storage, mixing, cleaning equipment, disposing of pesticides and containers.
Site
Refers to not where but what entity a pesticide can be used on
Label
The label is the info about the product and its use that is printed on or attached to the container
Labeling
Includes the label itself plus all the information referenced on the label, on a brochure given by the manufacturer, approved by regulatory agencies regarding the use of the product
Labeled
A term to say that a pesticide can be used on a certain plant/product OR if the correct pesticide label has been attached to a container
Importance of label- Proper use
All the info you need to safely and effectively use the pesticide is on the label (name, manufacturer, restrictions, hazards, safety precautions, directions)
Importance of label- Legal Implications
It is against the law for you to go against the label bc of the human and environmental risks associated with pesticide use
