Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is chemistry?
Chemistry is the science that seeks to
understand what matter does by
studying what atoms and molecules do.
What is matter?
Matter is defined as anything that occupies space and has mass
What determines properties?
Structure Determines Properties!
Chemists believe that the properties of a substance are determined by
the kinds, numbers and relationships between these pieces
What are things made of?
All things are made of atoms.
▪ Atoms and molecules are tiny particles that
compose all common matter.
▪ Chemical bonds hold atoms together.
▪ Atoms combine to form different types of molecules.
The Scientific Method?
A way of learning that emphasizes making observations and doing
experiments
* Characteristics of the Scientific Method: Observation, formulation of
Hypotheses, Experimentation and formulation of Laws and Theories
Atomic Theory by John Dalton?
Explained the law of conservation of mass by
proposing that all matter was composed of
small, indestructible particles called atoms
What’s the Difference Between a Law and a Theory?
- Laws answer the question ‘What’ will happen.
- Theories answer the question ‘Why’ does something happen.
