Chapter 1 Flashcards
Foundations of Environmental Systems and Societies
Environmental Value System (EVS)
A set of paradigms and views that shape how we approach environmental issues.
Ecocentrism
An EVS that:
- focuses on the environment
- believes humans are equal with other animals
- emphasizes a less materialistic approach to life with greater self-sufficiency of societies.
Anthropocentrism
An EVS that:
- focuses on human well-being
- believes humans are the most important species
- believes it is our responsibility to manage the environment
Technocentrism
An EVS that:
- focuses on the economy
- believes humans are the most important species
- believes technology is the key to solving problems (nature is a model but can be replaced by technology)
Laws of Thermodynamics
1.) Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only transferred and transformed.
2.) It is not possible to convert one form of energy to another with 100% efficiency.
Positive Feedback
Feedback that increases change; promotes deviation away from equilibrium.
This is BAD.
Negative Feedback
Feedback that counteracts any deviation away from equilibrium back towards it.
This is GOOD.
