A highly specialized chain of resources designed to minimize the impact of sudden injury and illness on our society
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) System
What are the 10 components of an integrated EMS System?
Regulation and policy, resource management, human resources and training, transportation, facilitates, communications, public information and education, medical direction, trauma systems, and evaluation.
What does medical director do?
this physician assumes ultimate responsibility for the patient care aspect of an EMS System
What does an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) DO
They are the first to the scene of an emergency. They provide immediate care for life threatening injuries or illness. Control the scene and prepare for the arrival of the ambulance.
What does an EMT do?
They have the minimum level of certification for ambulance personnel. Take care of the ill or injured.
What can an Advanced EMT do?
administer meds, start intravenous lines, interpret and shock specific heart rhythms, provide airway management.
What does a paramedic do?
Everything that the advacned EMT can do AND perform a variety of advanced procedures. ALS skills. BLS skills.
What type of orders allow EMTs to provide specific types of treatment or meds for a specific patient
Standing orders
Instructions (form the medical directors standard orders) that allow EMTs to give certain meds or perform certain procedures without directly speaking to the medical director or another physician
Off-line medical direction
Real time instruction for a patient from the medical director
On-line medical direction
Who are the people that answer 911 calls?
Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP)
Medically trained people who answer and provide aid during 911 calls
Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD)
